How to Install an APK on Android Safely

Learn how to install an APK file on any Android phone safely: enabling unknown sources, checking the file, and avoiding fake downloads.

An APK is the installer file format for Android apps. Apps that are not on Google Play, such as iTube, are installed from an APK. Here is how to do it safely.

1. Download from a source you trust

Always download from the app's own website. Avoid random mirror sites and "modded" copies, which are the most common way malware spreads. The official iTube APK is on our download page.

2. Allow installs from your browser

On Android 8 and later, Android asks for permission the first time you open an APK: tap Settings and enable Allow from this source for your browser or file manager. On Android 7 and earlier, enable Unknown sources under Settings → Security.

3. Open and install the file

Open the downloaded APK from your notification bar or Files app, read the permissions, and tap Install.

4. Switch the permission back off

After installing, go back and disable the install permission for that browser. This keeps your phone locked down.

Safety checklist

  • Download only from the developer's website.
  • Check the app name and requested permissions look sensible.
  • Keep Google Play Protect turned on.
  • Scan the file with a free scanner such as VirusTotal if unsure.
